Students at Viking Elementary Participate in One-Day Workshop

Paul Johnson visits sixth graders for project funded by LRAC

Students pose with Pelican Rapids artist Paul Johnson after learning about his process when designing and making a new mural.

On January 4th, 2022, students at Viking Elementary were able to meet Paul Johnson, a mural artist hailing from their town of Pelican Rapids. His presentation, which focused on designing and implementing public art, was the official kick-off for an artistic endeavor recently funded by one of LRAC’s Legacy Grants.

A Collaborative Effort for Future Public Mural in Pelican Rapids

Thanks to a Legacy Grant of $9,950 awarded to the City of Pelican Rapids in November of 2021, the sixth grade students at Viking Elementary School were able to experience a unique, one-day workshop with Midwest mural artist, Paul Johnson. The goal of this workshop was to introduce the students to mural making and public art in preparation for designing a community mural.

“We are so thankful for the LRAC!”
-Kate Martinez, Pelican Rapids

The mural, themed around the journey of Pelican Rapids as a community, will feature butterflies that represent their diverse population, highlighted within nature’s surroundings. It is set to be installed on a prominent building on main street, downtown Pelican Rapids at the entrance to their city park system.
